Primary expertise

Planning and provision of overall oral care for cancer patients as part of a multidisciplinary team; treatment of infections of dental origin; preventive and restorative dentistry, particularly in patients with dry mouth; conventional dental crowns and bridges (using CAD-CAM technology); treatment of gingival and periodontal diseases; treatment of oral mucosal infections and graft-versus-host reactions.

Experience

Tuomas Waltimo has been collaborating Chief Dental/Oral Medicine Specialist at the University Hospital Basel’s stem cell transplant unit for 20 years and professor at the University of Basel since 2007. The main focuses of his clinical and research work have been the prevention and treatment of infections of dental origin, and mouth dryness and salivary gland dysfunction during cancer treatment and the subsequent effects of these conditions on oral health and quality of life.

Waltimo has written over 100 peer-reviewed original articles and numerous publications for the further training of dental professionals and contributed to textbooks on clinical dentistry, oral biology, microbiology and epidemiology.

Matti Mauramo

Primary expertise

Matti Mauramo is an experienced and versatile dentist and physician with particular expertise in mucosal conditions such as lichen planus and fungal infections. His areas of expertise also include the oral manifestations of systemic conditions and medicinal agents and the problematics of mouth dryness. With almost 20 years’ experience, he is able to perform procedures and examinations combining dental and medical science, such as biopsies and laboratory tests, and also standard general dental care with consideration for underlying illnesses.

Experience

Mauramo was awarded his Licentiate in Dentistry from the University of Helsinki in 2004, since when he has worked continuously as a general dentist for the public and private sectors. His employers most closely connected with the treatment of difficult oral infections and mucosal illnesses in cancer patients have been the University of Basel (Switzerland), the Unit for Specialised Oral Care (mucous membrane outpatient clinic) in Helsinki and Helsinki University Hospital (outpatient clinic for oral and maxillofacial diseases). Other long-term employers include the city of Vantaa, Terveystalo and Spidermed.

Mauramo was awarded his Licentiate in Medicine in 2017 and worked as a health centre physician for the city of Vantaa in 2018–2019. He is currently in the final stages of training at HUSLAB (Helsinki University Hospital Laboratory) to become a pathologist. He also works for the University of Helsinki as a clinical teacher of pathology for medical students.

Having gained his PhD in Dentistry in 2010, Mauramo has continued actively researching topics such as the connection between medicinal agents and nutrients and oral cancer; oral pathology; and oral problems in haematological cancer patients. Mauramo has produced around 20 international peer-reviewed original publications and several publications on the oral care of cancer patients.
